Weddings at Taunton School – Legal Considerations
In order to get married in Taunton School Chapel (a Christian wedding service), couples who live in Somerset * must undertake the legal preliminaries at their local registry office.
This is called giving notice of marriage and may be done at any time during the year leading up to the marriage. The ‘authorisation’ which follows such preliminaries must be given to the Taunton School Authorised Person before the wedding.
The Wedding Team at Taunton School and Taunton’s Superintendent Registrar will be pleased to advise on the legal preliminaries. It is important to do this in plenty of time – if they are not properly completed the marriage may not proceed.
On the day, your marriage will be registered in the Taunton School Chapel registers and Taunton School will provide you with your marriage certificate. Authorisation for marriage should be brought with you on the day and given to the Authorised Person (this is the person completing the registers for Taunton School).
Weddings held in Taunton School Chapel are of a religious nature. Civil ceremonies cannot be conducted in the Chapel.
Wedding Blessings taking place in the Chapel do not require the above as the wedding has already taken place and the couple are already legally married. Chapel hire rate and Ministers fee is still payable.
*For couples who do not live in Somerset who wish to marry in Taunton School Chapel - either the bride or groom must be permanently resident in Somerset or be willing to become resident for clear seven days before the legal preliminaries take place.
Guidance for those who wish to marry on Approved Premises – the Civil Ceremony
Booking the Registrar
As soon as couples have made provisional arrangements for the date and time on which they wish to be married in approved premises they should contact the Superintendent for the district in which the premises are situated.
Without the presence of this Superintendent Registrar and a Registrar there can be no marriage. It is therefore essential that couples immediately make a booking with the Registrars for attendance at the proposed marriage.
For this attendance, fees will be payable to the Superintendent Registrar. Fees for 2014 are as follows: Monday-Thursday, £420; Friday and Saturday, £450; Sunday, £500; Bank Holiday, £600.
It is the responsibility of the couple (not of the proprietors of the approved premises) to make the necessary booking with the Register Office serving the approved premises.
Giving notice of where the couple live
Before a marriage can be solemnised, the bride and groom must make certain legal declarations in front of a Registrar. This is called Giving Notice of Marriage. The couple must each give Notice of Marriage to the Superintendent Registrar(s) of the district(s) in which they live. If the bride and groom live in different districts, a separate notice must be given in each district. The Notices must be given in person by both the bride and groom and cannot be given more than 12 calendar months before the date of the wedding. The Superintendent who is to perform the ceremony will tell the bride and groom what local arrangements are for the timing of the Giving of Notice. In Taunton, we ask for Notice to be given about three months before the marriage. It is entirely the responsibility of the couple to ensure that Notice is properly given. A fee of £35 is payable for each Notice of Marriage given.
Collecting the authority
When notice is given in a different registration district from the one where the marriage is taking place, the couple will have to collect the authorities for marriage from their local Registry Office and make arrangements to deliver them to the officiating Registrars at least two days before the marriage.
Form of Ceremony
Most Superintendents will spend some time deciding with each couple what sort of ceremony they would like to have, but it is important to note that only a civil, non-religious ceremony can be permitted by the Superintendent Registrar. Any music, reading, words or performance which form part of the ceremony must be secular. The content of the ceremony must be agreed in advance with the Superintendent Registrar who will be attending the ceremony. Once the Registrars have left the approved premises, the couple can continue their celebration by having a blessing or other religious ceremony if they wish.
Any rights of copyright for music, readings etc permitted at the ceremony are a matter for the couple and the holder of the approval.
